Through diverse experiences, inspiration and application, I have cultivated a broad background in Fine Art. I have had the pleasure of training with a multitude of amazing artists. My formal education includes a Master of Art in Medical Illustration from UT Southwestern Medical Center (1998) and an undergraduate degree from Austin College (1986).
My fascination with pastels began with an attraction to the pure colors of pastels and the ability to "paint" as well as draw with the medium. I am initially attracted to a scene for its geometric relationships, rhythm or by a striking color contrast or harmony. I use strong imaginative color and many layers of pastel to create contemporary images. The interaction of color and composition evolves to describe the world as I see it.
I use quality soft and hard pastels on sanded archival papers that are created specifically to hold the pastel on the paper. I do not use fixatives because they dull or darken the pastel colors. Pastels must be framed under glass to protect the painting. I frame all of my pastels in minimal frames to protect them.
